An important, perhaps the most important, task of a good teacher is to dissuade students from making hasty judgments, for it is with this craving that we come into the world, while on the contrary reason only develops very slowly. Infants immediately start crying when they feel unwell and they smile when being treated kindly. But the vocabulary of pubescent young people still contains mainly expressions like super, cool, great or negative ones like poo, disgusting, evil etc. The aversion to independent thinking and the tendency to replace arguments with hasty values and judgments remains in later life – for many people throughout their lives.

De gustibus EST disputandum

Eine wichtige, vielleicht die wichtigste Aufgabe eines guten Lehrers hat darin zu bestehen, den Schülern voreiliges Urteilen abzugewöhnen, denn mit diesem Bedürfnis kommen wir auf die Welt, während der Verstand sich nur sehr langsam entfaltet. Der Säugling schreit sofort, wenn ihm unwohl ist, und er lächelt, wenn man ihn freundlich behandelt. Aber auch das Vokabular von Pubertierenden enthält vor allem Ausdrücke wie super, geil, toll und anderseits ablehnendes Werten wie pfui, widerlich, böse etc. Die Abneigung gegen eigenständiges Denken und die Neigung, Argumente durch vorschnelles Werten und Urteilen zu ersetzen, bleibt darüber hinaus bei vielen Menschen erhalten – bei nicht wenigen ein Leben lang.
